Chicago Information
Chicago is based on a 1926 play by Maurine Dallas Watkins inspired by the stories of two female murder suspects who were acquitted. Those women inspired the characters of Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart, who become celebrities as they are tried for their crimes.
The original Broadway production opened 1975 and closed in 1977. The current Broadway revival opened in 1996 and has become the longest running musical revival in Broadway history. It won six Tony awards and inspired a successful film in 2002.
